Nutrient #1  Alpha Lipoic Acid

If you think the pharmaceutical industry is looking after your best interests…

Here is a true story about how one doctor defied medical tyrants out of desperation to cure a married couple from liver failure!

In 1977, John and Eunice were admitted to hospital in Cleveland, Ohio after ingesting deadly amanita mushrooms. They were diagnosed with acute liver failure and with liver transplants not a common solution, death was unavoidable. [10]

The doctor over-seeing John and Eunice assigned a medical resident of Case Western Reserve who had never had one single patient die on his watch called Dr Berkson.

Dr Berkson made contact with Dr Fred Bartler at the National Institute of Health hoping he could advise him on this extremely rare situation.  He suggested Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA).

Dr Bartler cited that animal studies had shown it helped with severe liver damage. [1]

The next day they began administering intravenous alpha lipoic acid to John and Eunice and its effect was miraculous!

The alpha lipoic acid stimulated rapid liver regeneration and within two weeks John and Eunice fully recovered, went home and lived for another 36 years and well into their late 80’s!

So here is the villain bit of the story…

Rather than being added to the medical journal as a revolutionary and speedy recovery story…

Sadly, Dr Berkson was severely criticised for not following medical protocol and was told to ‘quit fooling around with alpha lipoic acid!’

But it doesn’t stop there with the recriminations he suffered for being a ‘misfit’ in the hospital system…

Other patients at the hospital who similarly were on death's door with liver failure... under Dr Berkson’s care were administered alpha lipoic acid against hospital requests because he couldn’t bear to see them die.

Because of Berkson’s misconduct he was accused of harming these patients.

The hospital then went on to alter the records of these patients while continuing to ostracise and humiliate Berkson.

Eventually, Berkson opened his own private practice where he passionately continued to save patients with liver disease.

With the incredible support of Dr Bartler, Dr Berskon continued his work with alpha lipoic acid with amazing success.

Here’s the scariest thing about Berkson’s story…

Without his courageous endeavour to listen to his smart doctor instincts, many ethical doctors would be deep in despair about how to heal their patients liver before it’s too late!

Because still to this day Berkson's breakthrough for liver disease is seen as controversial.

But of course Big Pharma doesn't want you to know about alpha lipoic acid because they're not fleecing their pockets with millions of dollars of our precious and hardworking money!

So what is alpha lipoic acid?

Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant.

It has a unique ability to neutralize toxins, chelate heavy metals and protect against DNA damage. [10]

Humans only produce alpha lipoic acid in small amounts. That’s why many men and women end up resorting to supplements to optimize their intake.

Red meat and organ meats such as liver are great sources of alpha lipoic acid, but vegetables such as broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, and my favourite brussels sprouts also contain it too.

The issue is getting the high dosage of alpha lipoic acid that is needed; therefore supplements can stack up to 1,000 times more alpha lipoic acid than food…

It’s the concentration that is necessary to get the full benefit that foods just can’t do.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is an antioxidant that reduces liver fibrosis associated with hepatitis (liver inflammation). It can promote liver regeneration and can reverse liver cirrhosis (which conventional medicine previously considered impossible).

Alpha lipoic acid is fat soluble which means that it can penetrate deep into the cells to exert its healing effects. [10]

What is really exciting is how multi purposed alpha lipoic acid is.

It’s an incredible supplement that several studies have shown reduce inflammation in the body, which is the precursor to the resistance to weight loss.

High levels of inflammation is really bad when you are trying to lose weight because they impact hormone levels, which directly impact your fat cells.

We all know that inflammation is a ‘bad cop’ but many people don’t really know why when you are trying to lose weight. [2].

Your fat cells do more than just give you a jelly belly or cellulite. They are responsible for hormonal signals that tell your brain to burn fat and increase metabolism.

High levels of inflammation lead to dysregulation of these hormones and contribute to the condition known as leptin resistance. [3]

Leptin resistance is one of the main causes of weight loss resistance, which basically makes weight loss almost impossible. [4]

As you can see, alpha lipoic acid is not just beneficial to liver health but also great for weight loss.

Now that’s a double bonus!

Oh I almost forgot to share with you another interesting weight loss study on alpha lipoic acid…

Animal studies indicate that it can reduce the activity of the enzyme AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which is located in your brain’s hypothalamus. [5] [6]

When AMPK is more active, it may increase feelings of hunger.

However, on the other side of the coin, suppressing AMPK activity may increase the number of calories your body burns at rest. What was incredible was the animals who took alpha lipoic acid burned more calories [7] [8]

Another analysis of 12 studies found that people who took alpha lipoic acid lost an average of 2.8 pounds (1.27 kg) more than those taking a placebo over an average of 23 weeks [9]

Nutrient #2  Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is an ancient herb that has been used for thousands of years to treat liver problems. It grows natively in Mediterranean countries. [11]

Silymarin is the primary ingredient used in milk thistle. [23]

Milk thistle’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents can be extremely valuable to liver health. With Silymarin as its main active element, it assists with healing damage, which has already occurred. [11]

This herb melts away the build-up of everyday toxins. It can prevent liver disease, a fatty liver and cirrhosis. Milk thistle removes toxicity from alcohol poisoning and stimulates the bile flow to help overall detoxification.

Because the liver is the primary fat-burning organ, milk thistle is often recommended to aid the body with regular detoxification and faster metabolic rates.

Milk thistle corrects digestion as it speeds up the removal of toxins and alleviates stress placed on the elimination organs, including the liver. The better the liver functions, the more effective it is in metabolising fat. [24]

Nutrient #3  Ashwagandha

In laboratory studies when rats were infected with carbendazim (a common pesticide used on food) they showed liver lesions.

However, when they were treated with ashwagandha for 48 days straight they were cured with no signs of the lesions appearing.

It was concluded by the researchers that ashwagandha was a potent chemical eliminator that acts as a free radical scavenger.

While ashwagandha prevents free radicals from being created, it also abolishes the existing ones. This means it is a powerful agent for protecting the overall health of the liver.

Studies show that ashwagandha prevents liver damage caused by medication and reverses the ill effects of these over the counter drugs. It restores our natural antioxidant levels.

Ashwagandha is an extremely effective medicinal herb that has a multitude of benefits pertaining to healthy liver function.

Nutrient #4  N-acetyl L-cystein

NAC has been used in therapeutic practices for many decades. It helps to support mucous production and liver health. [26]

Clinical studies report NAC helps as a free radical scavenger, particularly when glutathione replenishment is needed.

NAC also helps to control high blood sugar and obesity.

The fatty tissue that can be associated with these conditions is often due to toxins accumulated in the liver and NAC show to assist with optimal liver detoxification. [25]

Nutrient #5  Green Tea Extract

Green tea extract is a highly concentrated tea source, which has many benefits in aiding liver function.

It is particularly high in antioxidants and it fights unsound atoms that cause cellular damage.

Green tea is beneficial in reducing high levels of enzymes including alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). [27]

When you have blood tests and your ALT and AST are high that suggests liver damage. [28]

A study found that a combination of green tea extract and moderate exercise reduced the severity of obesity and fatty liver disease by a whopping 75 per cent.

In a study conducted with mice being fed a high fat diet over the course of 16 weeks, it was discovered that when green tea extract was consumed a half of the lipid deposits in the mice were reduced. [29] Lipids are molecules housing hydrocarbons and create building blocks for cellular function. [30]

Alongside this, studies concluded that green tea extract when tested on mice was a very effective potent antioxidant in alcohol intoxication. [31]

Nutrient #6  Tumeric

Turmeric is one of the most effective medicinal herbs that contain copious healing properties.

It is an Ayurvedic herb that has long been used by ancient Indian cultures to aid optimal liver health. [32]

A study on rats exposed to mercury concluded that having turmeric for 3 days reduced their mercury levels and the detoxification and protective effect was purely down to this amazing herb.

The results showed reversed biochemical changes in kidney and liver injury too.

The major result was the reduction in mercury was so significant indicating that enhanced liver filtration and detoxification of turmeric was extremely positive.

However, it’s not just mercury, it’s other heavy metals that cause toxicity in the liver that turmeric can shield against.

Turmeric reduces the oxidative degradation of lipids and contributes in protecting the liver from harm. The curcuminoids suppress hepatic oxidative stress, which is very important for the prevention of liver disease.

Further research showed that turmeric has the capacity to reduce alcohol liver injury.

Results proved that it was an excellent herb to perform liver detoxification. In fact, rats tested reversed all pathological effects caused by alcohol.

Turmeric has proven amazing results in preventing liver injury by correcting metabolic imbalances. [32]

Nutrient #7  Dandelion Extract

This is one of my favourite liver herbs and I drink it in a coffee form.

I must admit it is an acquired taste…

My dad says it takes like ‘Cat piss!’

I wouldn’t go that far…

The good news is you can now take it in capsule form…

Dandelion extract (Taraxacum officinale)is one of the incredible Bridport Health Liver Supplements herbs.

A little bit about Dandelion…

It is a wild flower that grows naturally in many countries around the world. This widespread flower is well known for its yellow colour and fluffy blowball that breaks up and flies away in the wind.

The dandelion has long been taken as a medicinal herb and used as a diuretic to help with stomach, kidney, gallbladder and liver problems.

Dandelion is known to play a significant role in liver disorders and injuries. It helps to neutralize oxidative stress and to protect against reactive nitrogen species (RNS) a type of molecule that damages cells. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory that protects the liver.

Research suggests that dandelion root extract protects against liver damage caused by alcohol consumption. Tests done with mice discovered that this extract prevented alcohol liver toxicity and injury by reducing liver enzymes, which are elevated when drinking alcohol.

Furthermore, dandelion protect against liver fibrosis and cirrhosis…[34]

Fibrosis is scar tissue that develops when the liver is constantly damaged and the bile ducts are blocked and it can be permanent…

Even Pharmaceutical drugs can cause liver damage and the precious dandelion can help deal with this. [35]

Dandelion root helps to cleanse the liver deeply by eliminating free radicals that interfere with the digestive enzymes produced by the liver. It assists in controlling levels of cholesterol and lipids in the blood.

Dandelion is considered a liver tonic as it powerfully detoxifies the liver and improves the flow of bile.

It is also an excellent herb that flushes out toxins and assists the liver to aid digestion and promotes healing…[36]

Let’s not stop at the top liver nutrients available in this supplement…

Because I knew that we could actually offer a lot more for worried drinkers.

The issue I have is so many liver supplements stop short on so many levels…

I wanted to make a supplement that I would be seriously proud of...

A supplement that would make a difference to liver health.

So James and I came up with what I guess you could call the Bonus nutrients that we know make an already great combination even better!

We added these to boost your liver health even more!

Remember, we want you to have a one-stop shopping liver supplement experience, so you don’t have to cram your kitchen cupboards with unnecessary amounts of supplements…

As well as the expense of it too.

Bonus Nutrient #1  Ginger Root Extract

Ginger is one of the most used spices in the world and its medicinal properties have been given by herbalists in many cultures to aid digestion and liver function.

A study published in the September 2010 issue of the ‘Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences’ showed ginger contains liver protective properties. Animals used in the study restored their blood composition to normal levels and their liver tissue showed improvement.

Ginger root protects the liver from ‘degenerative scar formation’ (fibrosis) according to a study published in ‘Nutrition and Metabolism.’ It helps combat liver degeneration and increases levels of antioxidant enzymes used by the organ. According to researchers it showed promising results in treating liver fibrosis.

Ginger also protects against fatty liver disease by reducing oxidative stress on the liver, decreasing insulin resistance and preventing inflammation… [37]

Bonus Nutrient #2  Glutathione

What causes fatty liver disease in the first place, and how can we treat it in long-term in a healthy way? Fatty liver disease begins when your body stores lipids in your liver cells. This storage of fat in the liver diminishes its ability to filter toxins and prompts an inflammatory immune response, causing damage to liver tissue.

Glutathione considered the ‘Master Antioxidant’ and is key to the regulation of the immune system and detoxification in every cell throughout the body. When alcohol consumed the whole body suffers. Free radical damage increases, the immune system is weakened and toxins build up in the body. [12]

When you drink alcohol your body breaks it down into acetaldehyde, which is a reactive compound more dangerous to the brain than alcohol itself. When glutathione is taken it assist greatly in ‘mopping’ up acetaldehyde in the system. [13]

Optimal levels of glutathione protect the liver from excess exposure to chemicals, pollutants, bad diet and even wrong yeasts. It’s repairs lever damage and offers long-term protection. [14]

Bonus Nutrient #3  Zinc

Zinc has been found to help the liver in many ways, including all liver diseases including a fatty liver and cirrhosis. Current research suggests zinc’s ability to inhibit inflammation makes it an extremely important for proper liver function. [15]

Zinc in a mineral and a trace element. Because it is a trace element very small amounts of it are crucial for our health. [17]

A study conducted by Dr Scott Read and Associate Professor Golo Ahlenstiel showed zinc is not only anti-inflammatory but also has antiviral effect of interferon, a protein a strongly associated with tissue damage in chronic liver disease. [16]

Dr Read claims ‘the data shows that zinc is a simple and effective treatment against acute and chronic inflammation of the liver.’ [17]

Zinc is essential for cell function, including celling growth, repair, division and activation. It activates DNA synthesis and RNA transcription. Zinc has over 300 enzymes, so even if you have a slight deficiency it can deeply affect your immunity and liver health. [18]

If you experience appetite loss, hair loss, altered taste and smell, testicular atrophy, cerebral and immune dysfunction it is often an indication of a fatty liver and at its extreme chronic liver disease. [19]

There is strong medical evidence has concluded that appropriate amounts of zinc vastly improved severe liver aliments particularly cirrhosis when taken over a 6 month period. [20]

Bonus Nutrient #4  The Essential B Vitamins

Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3 is also known as niacin and it is one of the eight B complex water-soluble vitamins. It has a large range of uses such as helping the function of the digestive system, skin and nervous system.

The name niacin comes from the nicotinic acid vitamin and it assists in breaking down carbohydrates and turning fats and proteins into energy. [38]

There are three types of compounds contained in vitamin B3. There’s niacin (nicotinic acid), Niacinamide (nicotinamide) and Inositol hexanicotinate. These important components of niacin are used as treatments to reduce high cholesterol levels and it also helps to repair the biochemical levels from alcohol consumption. [39]

Vitamin B3 is crucial in optimizing proper glandular and liver function. It helps to produce certain hormones in the adrenal glands and remove toxic chemicals from the liver. [38]

Vitamin B3 plays a significant role in regaining liver health. It helps regulate the metabolism and neurotransmitter balance. Drinking alcohol ruthlessly depletes niacin and it is imperative levels are maintained as alcohol burns the supply quickly.

If you experience fatigue, depression, swollen tongue, indigestion and cranker sores it means you have a lack of niacin. If you drink alcohol for an extended period you will more than likely have a Vitamin B3 deficiency. [39]

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 not only improves liver function; it has many other benefits as well.

It helps the central nervous system, aids metabolism and creates neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.

The body does not store Vitamin B6 as it releases through urination, so a daily dose of it is essential for not just the liver but for our blood cells too.

It helps many functions in the body and creates over one hundred enzyme reactions to metabolize fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

Taking vitamin B6 helps to protect us from the impact of air pollution, which has an impact on our DNA. [40]

Our DNA holds the command for building proteins that create a multitude of functions in each cell of the liver. Since DNA cells are replicated (copied) when we are exposed to too many environmental and lifestyle factors it can result in weakened DNA replication… [41]

Not only this, people who drink alcohol are more likely to experience low vitamin B6 levels.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 helps proper red blood cell growth, neurological function, liver regeneration, heart, eyes and bone health and contributes DNA synthesis. [42]

As we are aware too much alcohol takes its toll on the liver and the nervous system.

Acetaldehyde is formed by excess alcohol and it accelerates brain dysfunction. [43]

Too much alcohol depletes glutathione levels in the liver and this lessens the body’s ability to produce vitamin B12. In turn the liver’s function is compromised and depression and anxiety can creep in. [44]

Pantothenic Acid

Pantothenic Acid is commonly known as Vitamin B5. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and is crucial in controlling the production of cortisol. It helps with the metabolism of fat, carbohydrates, and proteins. [45]

Pantothenic acid is used to manufacture Coenzyme A (CoA), which is an important component of liver function.

A high amount of CoA is focused in the liver and plays a critical role in eliminating toxins.

Appropriate levels of B5 are needed for proper liver function. [46]

Bonus Nutrient #5  SL11 Probiotic Blend

Drum Roll...

And now for the really exciting news!

The Probiotic Blend .

Probiotics have been proven to have a positive effect on liver health.

Probiotics have been used to treat several liver diseases. They lessen the production of bacterial toxins, balance autoimmune reactions, intestinal absorbency and reduce inflammation. [47]

Lactobacillus Casei

Lactobacillus Casei (L. casei) is one of the many amazing bacteria to help your digestive system work more efficiently…[48]

It is considered a major nutrient for metabolism and detoxification in which the liver plays a crucial part and prevents external toxicity from entering the bloodstream [49]. The gut is responsible for carrying blood supplies through the intestinal tract and to the liver. [51]

This probiotic is widely used in the food industry. It strengthens the immune system and fights infections. [49]

It also protects us at the beginning stages of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. [50]

It was discovered that people with cirrhosis had at least 50 percent of bacterial overgrowth and taking L Casei helped with gut and liver recovery.

Lactobacillus Casei is used in a variety of probiotics to prevent liver diseases, infections, cirrhosis, and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. [51]

Lactobacillus Acidophilus

Lactobacillus acidophilus (L.Acidophilus) is a bacterium found in your intestines and it plays an imperative role in overall health including liver function. (52)

Taking lactobacillus acidophilus has many benefits such as protecting and boosting the immune system, eliminating poisons, preventing viruses and pathogens. It aids the gut and the liver to restore from the use of antibiotics/ drugs plus it helps absorb nutrients.

A large amount of the body’s immune function is heavily reliant on the digestive tract.

L. Acidophilus is a friendly probiotic and recognizes harmful pathogens living in the immune system. It protects the bacteria to stimulate antibodies and stop harmful microorganisms such is E-coli, H.Pylori and salmonella.

Lactobacillus acidophilus eliminates toxicity particularly when you eat foods that are contaminated with bad toxins or bacteria.

This probiotic helps to digest food. It produces peroxide hydrogen, lactic acid along with other substances, which fights unwelcomed harmful organisms. L.Acidophilus makes lactase, an enzyme that changes lactose into ordinary sugar.

Lactobacillus Acidophilus kills toxic and bacterial pathogens before they cause disease. Harmful and unhealthy bacteria are blocked by this probiotic by preserving PH balance.

Antibiotics kill the friendly bacteria in your body. Lactobacillus acidophilus helps restore good bacteria levels in the gut and is excellent for liver health too. [53]

Lactobacillus Salivarius

Lactobacillus Salivarius (L.salivarius) is a bacteria that lives in our saliva. It metabolizes carbohydrates to produce lactic acid and acetic acid. It lives in the colon, small intestines, vagina and mouths.

Taking L.salivarius stops the growth and spread of pathogens along with other microorganisms that cause disease and infection. It does this by producing hydrogen peroxide and adds antimicrobial compounds.

This probiotic improves oral hygiene and prevents intestinal diseases. It has the ability to create a lot of bacteria that fights against the development of plaque and gum disease.

Lactobacillus salivarius is also in our small intestine and it helps eliminate gastrointestinal problems, which is very important as 70 percent of our immune system is in the gut. It targets invading pathogens and helps with the digestion of protein…[54]

Lactobacillus Paracasei

Lactobacillus paracasei (L.paracasei) is commonly found in the mouth and intestinal tract. This bacterium has a positive effect on the immune system and the digestion.

It also prevents diarrhoea and is very effective for relieving common conditions such as yeast infections.

L.paracasei helps the body’s immune function and its antioxidant capabilities are extremely useful to counteract oxidative stress.

Recent studies suggest that L.paracasei may assist in combating weight gain. It has shown to be successful in reducing body fat and visceral fat. Visceral fat is an unhealthy fat that can cover major organs including the liver.

Due to modern daily living levels of L.paracasei can be low through poor diet and the use of antibiotics. It is important to restore a healthy bacterial balance in your intestines to ward off condition caused by an imbalance in the flora. [55]

Lactobacillus Rhamnosus

Lactobacillus rhamnosus (L.rhamnosus) is a friendly lactic acid bacterium which helps normalize the levels of gut microflora.

L.rhamnosus is extremely helpful for proper gut health. Taking it in a probiotic helps prevent GI infections, ulcers and IBS.

Besides being excellent for optimal gut health, it assists with recovery from respiratory illness, allergies, skin conditions, vaginal infections and immunity.

It promotes weight loss by reducing fat mass and administering leptin concentrations. It also fights against a high fat diet and reverses insulin resistance.

L.rhamnosus significantly reduces the blood level of triglycerides and cholesterol, liver fat and inflammation.

It protects again non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by accumulating beneficial bacteria into the small intestine and weakening liver fat.[56]

Lactobacillus Plantarum

Lactobacillus plantarum (L.plantarum) is a good bacteria that produces its own natural antibiotic that fights the bad bacteria.

It is known for improving digestion, increasing immunity, creating lysine (amino acid) and improving overall health.

L.plantarum is a fleeting resident in our body and it’s very resilient. It survives in stomach acid and makes the trip from the mouth to the intestines and through the colon easy.

It is a dynamic way of boosting your immunity and fiercely attacks the bad bacteria in our bodies. [57]

Bifidobacterium Lactis

Bifidobacterium lactis (B.lactis) is considered the superstar of gut health because of its ability to aid weight loss, blood sugar balance, strengthen immunity and heart health.

A study demonstrated that B.lactis reduced fat and glucose intolerance in mice with obesity and diabetes. It reduced an inflammatory substance called lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from bad bacteria.

It was also noted that this probiotic not only reduced inflammation in the mice but it also enhanced nitric oxide and antioxidant levels.

B.lactis creates a resilient gut microbiome that leads to a healthy immune system. [58]

Bifidobacterium Bifidum

Bifidobacterium bifidum (B.bifidum) is showing to be a very effective probiotic that has several benefits.

It has shown that B.bifidum is beneficial for treating H.pylori, IBS, constipation, lung infections, colitis and necrotizing enterocolitis, which is an infection of the intestinal lining caused by harmful bacteria.

Not only this, but it's probiotic components also make it very beneficial for the immune system. [59]

Bifidobacterium Longum

Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum) improves our immune responses and helps to prevent gut disorders, reduces cholesterol, suppresses allergies and improves skin.

Tests were done on infants and adults the results showed their immune responses were enhanced.

B.Longum stimulated the immune function of people who had received the influenza vaccine. In fact, it showed fewer respiratory tract infections and pneumonia by reducing inflammatory responses and speeding up lung recovery.

B. Longum significantly helps with recovery from non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, which is fatty liver disease. [60]

Lactobacillus Bulgaricus

Lactobacillus bulgaricus (L bulgaricus) is a good bacteria found in the GI tract.

There are a myriad of advantages of taking this probiotic including liver disease prevention, tooth decay and other oral problems. It also fights infection caused by harming bacteria in the intestine walls. [61]

And last but not least…

Bifidobacterium Breve

Bifidobacterium breve (B.breve) is an essential bacterium found in breast milk and gastrointestinal tracts in both babies and adults.

B.breve is great for gut health, obesity, infection, asthma and celiac disease. It creates an antiviral immune response and protects against influenza.

It also significantly reduced fat mass in 52 adults with the propensity for obesity.

When B.beve was given to mice it modified their gene expression, which is responsible for lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Not only this, it reduced the chances of accumulating visceral fat around the liver. [62]
